There's a rich heritage of block printing and when Retreat Myself owners, Erica Solomon and Penny van Schaik visited Jaipur, Rajasthan a few years ago, the draw & fascination of the century old traditions handing from one family member to another took hold.
For India, block printing enables a sense of pride—the age old craft of dyeing and stamping cotton (or other fabrics), using wooden blocks each carved from wood by hand, has been perfected over generations.
Whether it is Rajasthan's popular Dabu print, which uses the mud printing technique, or Gujarat's Ajrakh, featuring geometric motifs, each block print is symbolic of the country's vast heritage and rich culture—India is, after all, one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of block printed fabrics.
